Heading for the HEELS: ECCO does the ‘ultimate heel’

Oh, we do love a comfortable shoe, we do. Don’t get us wrong, we WORSHIP the stilettos, but the luxury of not feeling like both of your feet are broken by the end of the day is not something we come across often. So when we got wind of Ecco shoes releasing the ‘ultimate heel’ collection, we sent our SIX spy Nathalie Bonney to test it out.

According to a recent survey by ECCO shoes, the majority of women (63% to be exact) would wear high heels for longer if they were more comfortable. Not exactly worthy of breaking news status! All high heel wearers know the only too familiar feeling of burning soles and toes so cramped that ballet pointes and bound feet geisha style look comfortable by comparison. However much it hurts, we still go back and stick a stiletto on our tootsies to see that undeniable transformation to the posture, legs and the general air de sexiness.

Like wellington boots that don’t rub, or waterproof ballet pumps – the idea of comfortable high heels is seemingly just another unattainable show fantasy. Not so, says the Scandinavian shoemaker brand, which Autumn/Winter 2012 collection includes the ECCO Sculptured 65 range that attracted our attention with the promise of the ultimate high heel. Wanting to discover the truth behind such grand statement, I did my research and found out that ECCO are using DIP (direct-injected polyurethane) technology, which attaches the shoe upper to the sole by the polyurethane instead of glue. Which means the shoe gets this heavenly cushioned feeling and we get to save our feet from pain .

Science head off, the AW collection itself is worth a mention. The standout item in the Sculptured 65 range is the low-cut, lace up bootie, which oil-slick patent black caught my attention. I thought it was sturdy enough to wear all day but shiny and pretty enough to not get stuck with the ‘sensible shoe’ tag, which is simply unacceptable for cocktail drinking. I would dress it down with woolly tights in a contrasting colour and a full skirt, or glam up with leather leggings and a sheer blouse. The booties come in black, amber or grey, and in leather or patent leather finishes.

ECCO only uses leather that’s made according to the strictest environmental rules and requirements, and despite being a global company, the family-begun company still adheres to a strict no-waste policy.
